Whitley Bay V West Auckland - Video

HOLDERS Whitley Bay FC were knocked out of the FA Carlsberg Vase today to Northern League rivals West Auckland.

The 1-2 tie at Hillheads was decided in the dying minutes, when all three goals were scored in quick succession.

After ten minutes of play the match was delayed following an injury to Alex Francis of West Auckland.

Bay's LeePaul Scroggins was given a straight red card for the challenge, which saw Francis taken from the pitch in an ambulance after a 30 minute delay.

With the tie back underway the remaining first half was played out with both sides creating chances to take the lead.

On the second half Bay coped well despite being down to ten men, and both sides continued to come close to taking the lead, but it wasn't until the 89 minute that West Auckland took the lead through Matthew Moffat to the delight of the travelling supporters.

Yet a minute later Bay were back in it when Paul Robinson equalised, sending Hillheads into uproar.

With the match looking like it could go into extra time Michael Rae secured victory for West Auckland, bringing Whitley's infamous FA Vase run to a dramatic end.

Footage of the game can be seen below. Please note that the video does contain footage of the tackle which caused injury to Alex Francis at around 2mins 25 for those who may want to avoid watching it.
